Fargelære er studiet av fargane på det jamne. Overalt der det blir talt om fargar, oppstår eit behov for ei teoretisk eller praktisk orientert forståing av kva ein talar om – fargelæra er difor tverrvitenskapleg. Det omhandlar definisjonar (eller kategoriar) basert på fargehjulet: primærfarge, sekundærfarge og tertiærfarge.

Dei første prinsippa innan fargelære vart skrive ned av Leone Battista Alberti (ca. 1435) og Leonardo da Vinci (ca. 1490), men sjølve «fargelæra» byrja på 1700-talet, først kring striden kring fargeteorien til Isaac Newton (Opticks, 1704) og karakteren til såkalla primærfargar. Frå der utvikla det seg ein sjølvstendig kunstnarisk tradisjon med berre overflatisk samband til fargemåling og synsstudium.
