Kings of the Wild Frontier er det andre studioalbumet til det engelske new wave-bandet Adam and the Ants. Det kom ut i november 1980 på CBS Records International. Dette albumet introduserte Burundi-rytmen for popmusikken.[4]

Albumet gjekk til topps på UK Album Chart[5] og inneheldt tre hitsinglar. Albumet var det bestseljande albumet i Storbritannia i 1981 (og det 48. bestseljande i 1980) og vann prisen for årets album under Brit Awards i 1982. Albumet var Storbritannias nummer 1 seljande album i 1981 (og det 48. bestseljaren i 1980) og vann Beste britiske album ved Brit Awards 1982.

Bakgrunn og innspeling Endra

Etter at det meste av bandet hans vart lokka bort av produsenten Malcolm McLaren til å skipe Bow Wow Wow, spelte Adam Ant inn Kings of the Wild Frontier med gitaristen Marco Pirroni som den nye låtskrivarpartnaren sin.

Utgjeving Endra

Kings of the Wild Frontier vart gjeve ut 3. november 1980 av CBS Records i Storbritannia og Epic Records internasjonalt. Det gjekk til topps på UK Album Chart,[5] og gav tre hitsinglar: «Kings of the Wild Frontier», som vart gjeven ut i juli og nådde andreplassen på UK Singles Chart, «Dog Eat Dog», som nådde fjerdeplassen og «Antmusic», gjeve ut i desember og nådde andreplassen,[6] i tillegg til at han låg fem veker på toppen av singellista i Australia.[7]

Albumet vart ommastra og gjeve ut på ny i 2004 med fleire bonusspor.

Ein multi-plate, «Super Deluxe Edition», kom ut 20. mai 2016. Denne inkluderer ein DVD med den lenge utselde konsertvideoen Ants in Japan og ein CD frå ein konsert frå Chicago frå 1981.[8] Denne utgåva låg ei enkelt veke på UK Album Chart på ein 69. plass.[9] Ant framførte heile albumet live på turné i Storbritannia det året, og i USA, Australia og New Zealand i 2017.[10][11]

Fotografen Pete Ashworth skreiv: «Den 5. august 1980, før den første framføringa hans på Top of the Pops, samla Adam Ant bandet i eit lite øvingsrom i Brixton for å laga ein videotest. Fotografering av stillbilde frå LCD-skjermen under bandframføringa gav nokre kraftfulle bilete. To dagar seinare produserte ein repetisjonsopptak frå videoopptaket, i eit mørklagt studio biletet for omslaget...»[12] Den amerikanske versjonen av albumet droppa «Making History» til fordel for to spor skrivne av Ant før han slo seg saman med Marco Pirroni, «(You're So) Physical» og «Press Darlings».

I ei melding av den amerikanske utgåva for The Village Voice i mars 1981, skreiv Robert Christgau at albumet var eit svar på britisk punkrock-nihilisme: «Musikken, unødvendig å seia, er rock and roll, ei smart pop-punk-blanding med to trommeslagarar, mykje roping og mange B-filmknaggar. Spesielt på grunn av den kunstskolerte vokalen til Ant, finn eg ut at knaggane skurrar, men det kan berre bety at når det kjem til futuristiske krigarar, føretrekker eg Sandinistaer.»[3]

I ei seinare melding kalla Stephen Thomas Erlewine frå AllMusic det «eit av dei store definerande albuma i si tid. Det er rett og slett ikkje noko anna som det, ikkje noko anna som har den same bravaderen, den same sansen, den same glade sjølvforhøginga og camp-kjensla. Dette går langs ei strålande linje mellom camp og kunstnarisk frekkheit, og ho kom til nøyaktig rett tid – i forkant av new wave.»[13] Trouser Press omtalte det som albumet der Adam Ant «fann vibbene sine».[22]

Arv Endra

Kings of the Wild Frontier er inkludert i boka 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[23] Plata er òg ein av tjue CDaer i boksen Great British Albums gjeven ut av Sony Records i 2012.[24] I 1992 gav Nine Inch Nails ut ein coverversjon av «Physical (You're So)» på EP-en Broken, attskapt i ein industriell rockestil med meir aggressive gitarar og vokal enn originalen.[25] I 2020 inkluderte Rolling Stone Kings of the Wild Frontier på lista deira over dei 80 beste albuma frå 1980-åra.[26]

Superluksusutgåva Endra

20. mai 2016 gav Sony Music/Legacy Recordings ut ei luksusutgåve med fire plater av Kings of the Wild Frontier. Boksen inkluderte to CD-ar, ein DVD og ein 180-grams nymastra vinyl LP i gull.[27]
