David John Breeze, OBE, FSA, FRSE, HonFSAScot, Hon MIFA (fødd 25. juli 1944) er ein britisk arkeolog, pedagog og forskar som har studert Hadrianmuren, den antoninske muren og den romerske hæren. Han studerte under Eric Birley, og er eit medlem av den såkalla Durham-skulen i arkeologi. Han var ein nær ven og kollega av dr. Brian Dobson.

Breeze var elev ved Blackpool Grammar School.[1] Han studerte ved University of Durham, der han blei Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) i 1970. Avhandlinga hans heitte The immunes and principales of the Roman army.[2]

Virke endre

Etter å ha arbeidd for arkeologidepartmentet ved University of Durham i perioden 1968–9, blei Breeze utnemnd til Assistant Inspector of Ancient Monuments ved departementet Ministry of Public Building and Works. Han etterfølgde Iain MacIvor som Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Historic Scotland i 1989, og hadde denne rolla til 2005.[3][1] Han er blitt utnemnd til æresprofessor ved University of Durham, University of Edinburgh, University of Newcastle upon Tyne og University of Stirling.[4]

Han leia gruppa som førte fram til at Den antoninske muren fekk status som verdsarvstad i 2008, og var del av gruppa som skipa verdsarvstaden Dei romerske grensene (Frontiers of the Roman Empire), som er det fyrste fleirnasjonale dømet på ein slik. Ham var formann for Culture 2000-prosjektet Frontiers of the Roman Empire (2005–08). Saman med Sonja Jilek har han redigert ein fleirspråkleg bokserie om grensene til Romarriket. Rapporten om utgravingane hans ved den romerske festningen ved Bearsden ved en antoninske muren kom ut i 2016, med ei separat populærvitskapleg utgjeving etterpå.

Breeze har vore leiar for Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1987–90), Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (2008–11), Royal Archaeological Institute (2009–12) og Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society (2011–14). Han var formann for British Archaeological Awards frå 1993 til 2009, for International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies frå 2000 til 2015, og for Senhouse Museum Trust i Maryport frå 2013 til 2018. Han var med på å skipaHadrianic Society i 1971, og blei seinare ein støttespelar for avløysaren, Roman Army School, som blir halden i Durham kvar påske. Breeze leia komiteen for Pilgrimages of Hadrian's Wall 1989, 1999, 2009 og 2019, truleg den eldste arkeologiske turen i Storbritannia, og redigerte den 14. utgåva av Handbook to the Roman Wall, den eldste arkeologiske britiske guideboka som har vore uavbrote i prent og jamleg oppdatert.

Prisar og utmerkingar endre

Breeze blei tildelt eit æresdoktoar (Honorary Doctorate of Letters) av University of Glasgow i 2008. Han blei utnemnd til Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) i 2009.[5]

Han blei tildelt Current Archaeology sin pris Archaeologist of the Year ved Archaeology Awards 2009,[5][6] og European Archaeological Heritage Prize i 2010. Breeze blei presentert med eit festskrift i 2009: The Army and Frontiers of Rome redigert av William S. Hanson og gjeve ut av Journal of Roman Archaeology.

I 2021 blei Breeze gjeven Kenyon-medaljen av British Academy «for his outstanding contribution to the archaeology of the Roman Empire and to ensuring the inscription of the Antonine Wall as a World Heritage Site».[7]
