«Big Ten Inch Record», òg kjend som «Big Ten-Inch (Record of the Blues)»,[1] er ein rhythm and blues-song skriven av Fred Weismantel. Han vart først spelt inn i 1952 av Bull Moose Jackson og gitt ut av King Records. Songen vart seinare spelt inn av Aerosmith og gitt ut som ein del av albumet Toys in the Attic frå 1975. Han har vorte vurdert som ein av dei beste dobbelttydige songane gjennom tidene.[2]

Bull Moose Jackson endre

Originalversjonen av songen vart framført av Bull Moose Jackson. Han vart gitt ut i 1952 på King Records som plate 4580.[3][4] Jackson vart akkompagnert på innspelinga av Tiny Bradshaw's Orchestra.[5] Songen vart ingen hit, truleg fordi han var «for antydande» og «radiostasjonane ville ikkje spela han».[6][1]

Jackson slutta å opptre i 1960-åra og jobba som matserveringsarbeidar i Washington, D.C.. På 1980-talet vart populariteten hans gjenoppliva etter at eit band i Pennsylvania, The Flashcats, byrja å spela «Big Ten Inch Record» på konsertane sine og inviterte Jackson til å opptre med dei.[1][7]

Jackson sin versjon av songen har vorte nyutgjeve på fleire samleplater, inkludert Badman Jackson That's Me (1991),[8] Ride, Daddy, Ride and Other Songs of Love (1991),[9] Risque Blues: The King Anthology (2002),[10] The Very Best of Bull Moose Jackson: Big Ten-Inch Record (2004),[11] og The Bull Moose Jackson Collection 1945–55 (2013).[12]

Aerosmith endre

Rockebandet Aerosmith spelte inn songen på albumet Toys in the Attic frå 1975.[13] Innspelinga var den andre coversongen til Aerosmith av rhythm and blues-låtar frå tidlege i 1950-åra, etter å ha covra «Train Kept A-rollin'» på albumet Get Your Wings frå 1974.[14]

Songen fekk blanda meldingar. Ein kritikar spådde at han ville vera «den einaste Aerosmith-songen gamle historikarar og seriøse tenåringar vil spela om 100 år frå no av.»[15] På den andre sida kalla Mark Simmons i The Austin American-Statesman det «låg humor» og meinte at «dobbelttydninga 'Big Ten Inch' blir fortent slapp.»[16] <Sjølv o han ikkje var med på ''Aerosmith's Greatest Hits'' i 1980,<ref name=AGH/> har songen sidan vorte nyutgjeve på fleire Aerosmith-samlingar, inkludert Pandora's Box (1991),[17] Aerosmith's Greatest Hits 1973-1988 (2001),[18] O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits (2002),[19] og The Essential Aerosmith (2011).[20]

I tillegg til Aerosmith har songen òg vorte covra av andre artistar, mellom anna Sugar Blue og Marshall Crenshaw,[21] Al Copley,[22] Blerta, The Roadrunners,[23] Dana Gillespie[24] og Candye Kane.[25]

Tekst og dobbeltyding endre

På overflata skildrar songen reaksjonen til kjærasten til songaren når han speler den siste ti-tommars plata si. Men ved gjentatt bruk av ein kunstpause før ordet «Record», indikerer songen at kvinna ikkje er begeistra av plata, men av den ti tommar store penisen til songaren. Følgjande tekstlinjer er døme på dette:

I «The History of Rock & Roll» kalla Ed Ward songen «eit meisterverk av dobbelttying og timing. »[27] Sjølv om songteksten er skriven i form av ein «utvida seksuell metafor», har han vorte sitert som ein del av ein trend mot meir «open seksualitet» i rhythm and blues-musikken tidleg på 1950-talet.[28]

I 2014 rangerte Salon Aerosmith sin «Big Ten Inch Record» som ein av dei 19 beste dobbelttydige songane gjennom tidene.[29]
