Herodes den store

Herodes eller Herodes den store (fødd 73 eller 74 f.Kr., død 4 f.Kr.)[1] var konge av det romerske lydriket Judea i det første hundreåret f.Kr. Han er kjend for utviding av riket, ei storslått utviding av det andre tempelet i Jerusalem og bygging av festningane i Masada, Antonia og Herodium og hamna i Caesarea Maritima. Tilnamnet «den store» er likevel omstridd ettersom Herodes stod bak ei rekkje udådar og drap.[2] I kristen tradisjon blir han sett i samanheng med barnemorda i Betlehem, men denne førestillinga er vanlegvis rekna som uhistorisk.[3]
