Nail
Nail er ei eldre britisk måleining for lengd. Denne er typisk lik 1/16 yard eller 21⁄4 inches, tilsvarande 5,715 centimeter.[1] Nail er eit engelsk ord som kan tyda 'nagl' eller 'spikar'.
Opphavleg skal det ha vore breidda av ei fingernagl (engelsk nail) som var 3/4 tomme eller 1/16 fot. R.D. Connor nemner dette i The weights and measures of England (s. 84) utan å oppgje nokon referanse.[2] Zupko si A dictionary of weights and measures for the British Isles (s. 256) seier at einiing opphavleg var lengda frå tommelenaglar til leddet ved bonten av tommelen, eller frå enden av langfingeren til det andre leddet.[3] Tidleg i mellomalderen fekk det tydinga 1/16 med referanse til yard.
Ei anna forklaring er at eininga fekk namn frå spikrar hamra inn i bordet på ein disk til oppmåling for sal av klede etter lengd.[4][5][6]
Nail er nemnd i skodespelet The Taming of the Shrew av Shakespeare i samband med ein scene hjå ein skreddar:

Half-yard, quarter og nail er alle inndelingar av yard som blei brukt i oppmåling av klede.[8]
