After a while another fellow with anotherbottle appeared. We left the main track, the forestbecame finer and more lofty, and in the afternoon wearrived in Puerto Consuelo. Here Hermann Eberhardwas waiting for us with his motor-boat, and we speedilyran up the narrow inlet to his villa. It is the cosiestplace in Patagonia. Generally people do not take muchtrouble with their dwellings, and the stranger is aston-ished when he gets into Eberhards house and findshimself surrounded by all sorts of European comforts. Deeply interested in natural sciencehe opened his home to all the explorers who came tothese parts ; Quensel also had been his guest. Whenwe came back from the Channels in June we heard ofhis sudden and unexpected death. His son followsin his footsteps, and all who know him hope that theplot to deprive him of his camp will fail. On the occasionof the great auction in 1905, Captain Eberhard turnedto the Government claiming that an exception for hispiece of land ought to be made as he had explored thecountry and was the first colonist there. The Govern-ment proposed to the congress that he should getpermission to buy his ground privately.
