Even thenthe mare nearly had a fit when she saw the monster.It was Saturday, and more than one traveller hadalready started to celebrate the holiday. We had justsat down by the roadside to rest when a swarthyfigure came along, stopped and handed us a bottle,and did not leave us until we had taken two respect-able pulls. After a while another fellow with anotherbottle appeared. We left the main track, the forestbecame finer and more lofty, and in the afternoon wearrived in Puerto Consuelo. Here Hermann Eberhardwas waiting for us with his motor-boat, and we speedilyran up the narrow inlet to his villa. It is the cosiestplace in Patagonia. Generally people do not take muchtrouble with their dwellings, and the stranger is aston-ished when he gets into Eberhards house and findshimself surrounded by all sorts of European comforts. The name Eberhard is famous in Patagonia.
