Slekta til Hopkins kom frå Wales, men han var fødd og voks opp i London, der faren grunnla eit marint forsikringsselskap. Bror hans var poeten Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Lionel Hopkins eigde ei stor samling kinesiske orakelknoklar med påskrift (The Hopkins Collection of Inscribed Oracle Bone).
