George William Russell

George William Russell (10. april 1867–17. juli 1935) var ein irsk forfattar, kritikar og målar. Han skreiv under pseudonymet Æ. Russell var tilhengar av den irske nasjonalistiske rørsla. Han var også interessert i mystisisme, og var ein sentral peroson i ei teosofigruppe som kom saman i Dublin i mange år.

Russell fekk utdanning ved Rathmines School og ved Metropolitan School of Art, der han grunnla eit livslangt, om av og til stormande, vennskat med W.B. Yeats.

Russell nytta pseudonymet AE, eller rettare Æ, avleidd frå Æon, som stod for det livslange strevet til mennesket.

Den fyrste diktsamlinga hans, Homeward: Songs by the Way (1894), etablerte han som ein del av det som er blitt kjend som Irish Literary Revival. Æ møtte den unge James Joyce i 1902, og introduserte han for andre irske litterære figura, som William Butler Yeats. Han opptrer som litterær figur i «Scylla and Charybdis»-episoden i Joyce sitt verk Ulysses, der han forkastar Stephen Dedalus sine teoriar om Shakespeare. Dedalus låner pengar av han, og seier: «A.E.I.O.U.».

Dei samla dikta hans kom ut i 1913, med ei andre utgåve i 1926.
