Komponisten Thomas Wilson

Thomas Brendan Wilson (10. oktober 1927–12. juni 2001) var ein skotsk komponist. Han var ein nøkkelfigur i gjenopplivinga av interesse for skotsk klassisk musikk etter andre verdskrigen.

Bakgrunn

Wilson blei fødd i Trinidad i Colorado av britiske foreldre. Familien flytta tilbake til Storbritannia då han var 17 månader, og slo seg ned i i Glasgow-området i Skottland. Her blei Wilson buande resten av livet, bortsett frå tre år i Frankrike. Han tente i Royal Air Force frå 1945 til 1948.

Wilson blei hovudsakleg utdanna i Glasgow. Han studerte ved St. Mary's College i Aberdeen før han studerte musikk ved University of Glasgow (1948-1953) hjå Ernest Bullock og Frederick Rimmer, og tok doktorgrad her (DMus). Frå 1954 heldt han fram komposisjonsstudiar hjå Herbert Howells ved Royal College of Music.

Virke

Wilson fullførte fem symfoniar. Den fjerde, Passeleth Tapestry, hadde urframføring av Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Bryden Thomson 6. august 1988 i Paisley Abbey. Han fullførte fire konsertverk - for piano (1985), bratsj (1987), fiolin (1993, ein einsats-elegi til minne om Bryden Thomson) og gitar (1996) - og korverk i storskala, som Sequentiae Passionis (1971) for kor og orkester, og Confitemini Domino (1993), tinga av Royal College of Organists og urfamført i St Paul's Cathedral. Det største verket hans var ein opera, Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1972–75), tinga av Scottish Opera med utgangspunkt i ein roman av James Hogg.

Wilson blei utnemnd til kommandør (CBE) av Order of the British Empire i 1990.
