Paul Moon

Paul Moon (fødd 18. oktober 1968) er ein newzealandsk historikar og professor ved Auckland University of Technology. Han er ein profilert skribent om historiske og biografiske emne på New Zealand, og har spesialisert seg i historia til in maorifolket, Waitangitraktaten og den tidlege perioden av britisk styre.

Paul Moon har ein Bachelor of Arts-grad i historie og politiske studiar, ein Master of Philosophy-grad med utmerking, ein Master of Arts-grad med utmerking, og ein doktorgrad i filosofi. Han vart i 2003 innvald som Fellow of the Royal Historical Society ved University College London.

Moon er kjend for studiane sine om Waitangitraktaten, og han har gjeve ut to bøker om dette emnet. Han har også skrive biografiar om guvernørane William Hobson og Robert FitzRoy, og også om høvdingen i Ngā Puhi, Hone Heke.[1] I 2003 gav han ut boka Tohunga: Hohepa Kereopa, ei utgreiing om tohunga (menneske med ulike evner) i iwien Ngāi Tūhoe.[2] Han har òg skrive ein større biografi om Ngā Puhi-politikaren og kotahitanga (leiar for maoriparlament) Hone Heke Ngapua (1869–1909), og skreiv bestseljaren Fatal Frontiers – ei historie om New Zealand i 1830-åra.[3] I tillegg til å skriva bøker, er Moon ein flittig bidragsytar i nasjonale og internasjonale akademiske tidsskrift innanfor ulike historierelaterte emne.

Moon er for tida professor i historie ved fakultetet Te Ara Poutama (Faculty of Māori Development) ved Auckland University of Technology, der han har undervist sidan 1993, og er sett på som ein av dei økonomisk mest vellukka forfattarane på New Zealand, basert på ein kombinasjon av dei talrike utgjevingane og salet av kvar av bøkene hans.

Kritikk endre

Moon sine arbeid har fått kritikk frå somme bokmeldarar. Denne kritikken fell innanfor to kategoriar: Den første tek for seg forfattaren si historiske tilnærming. I fleire av bøkene sine fastslår Moon at han skriv historia sett gjennom augo på dei som deltok på den tida forteljingane fann stad, og ikkje med «den føremonen historikaren har ved å kunna sjå seg attende». Resultatet er at somme av konklusjonane hans skil seg frå det som har vorte avdekt gjennom seinare analysar. Den andre går på skrivestilen hans – og her er omtalane polariserte. Ein omtale kallar arbeidet hans «overdramatisert og upresist»,[4]
