The Blind Boys slo gjennom då dei i 1983 spelte i musikalen The Gospel at Colonus.[1][5][6] Sidan den gongen har gruppa turnert internasjonalt og spelt med ei rekkje artistar, som Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, Ben Harper, Bon Iver og Amadou & Mariam.[1][2][5][7][8] Gruppa si utgåve av Tom Waits-songen «Way Down in the Hole» vart nytta som kjenningsmelodi for den første sesongen av HBO-serien The Wire.[2][7]

The Blind Boys har vunne fem Grammyprisar i tillegg til at dei har fått ein Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award i 2009.[9] Dei fekk ein National Heritage Fellowship frå National Endowment for the Arts i 1994,[10] vart innlemma i Gospel Music Hall of Fame i 2003[11] og dei vart innlemma i Alabama Music Hall of Fame i 2010.[12] Gruppa vart òg invitert til Det kvite huset under administrasjonane til Bill Clinton, George W. Bush og Barack Obama.[5][13]
