Coe byrja karrieren med bandet til Humphrey Lyttelton frå 1957 til 1962 og vart så invitert inn i bandet til Count Basie[1] men det vart ikkje noko av, og han har sidan den gongen spelt med John Dankworth Orchestra, The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, Derek Bailey sitt Company, Stan Tracey, Michael Gibbs, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie og Bob Brookmeyer. Han spelte klarinett på Paul McCartney si innspeling av «I'll Give You a Ring» i 1982[2] og saksofon på John Martyn-albumet Solid Air i 1973.
