Khan var fødd i Los Angeles og vart kjend for arbeidet sitt med Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Michael Franks, Hubert Laws, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, James Brown, Maynard Ferguson og Weather Report. I 1977 turnerte han med CBS Jazz All Stars i Japan, og leia eit band kalla Eyewitness med musikarar som Steve Jordan, Anthony Jackson og Manolo Badrena. Khan har skrive fem bøker om jazz: Pentatonic Khancepts, Contemporary Chord Khancepts, The Wes Montgomary Guitar Folio, Pat Martino - The Early Years og Guitar Workshop Series. Albumet Borrowed Time vart nominert til Grammyprisen i 2007 for beste latinjazz-album.
I 1980- og 1990-åra var han medlem av gruppa Elements.
