How High the Moon
«How High the Moon» er ein jazzstandard med tekst av Nancy Hamilton og musikk av Morgan Lewis. Han vart først framført i Broadway-musikalen Two for the Show i 1940, der han vart sungen av Alfred Drake og Frances Comstock.[1] I Two for the Show er songen er sjeldant seriøst nummer i ein elles morosam musikalsk.

Innspelingar
endreDen første hitversjonen på plata vart laga av Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, med vokalisten Helen Forrest. Han vart spelt inn 7. februar 1940 og gjeve ut av Columbia Records med B-sida «Fable of the Rose».[2] Les Paul Trio spelte inn ein versjon på V-Disc med ein talt introduksjon i november 1945, gjeven ut av U.S. War Department. I 1948 fekk bandleiaren Stan Kenton noko suksess med sin versjon av melodien. Innspelinga med vokal av June Christy kom ut på Capitol Records med B-sida «Willow, Weep for Me» på ei utgåve[3] og «Interlude» på ei anna.[4] Han gjekk inn på magasinet Billboard Best Seller-lista 9. juli 1948 og nådde 27. plassen.[5]
Ei innspeling av songen av Les Paul og Mary Ford vart laga 4. januar 1951. Plata kom ut 26. mars på Capitol Records med B-sida «Walkin' and Whistlin' Blues»,[6] og låg 25 veker på Billboard-lista,[5] ni av dei på toppen av lista. Singelen vart sidan gjeven ut på ny med B-sida «Josephine».[7] Denne versjonen gjekk over til Most-Played Juke Box Rhythm & Blues Records-lista, der han nådde andreplassen.[8] Utgåva deira vart innlemma i Grammy Hall of Fame i 1979 og finst på lista til Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum over songar som forma Rock and Roll.[9]
Songen vart sungen i forskjellige utgåver av Ella Fitzgerald og vart i lag med Gershwin sin «Oh, Lady Be Good!», signaturlåten hennar. Ho framførte første gongen songen i Carnegie Hall den 29. september 1947.[1] Den første innspelinga hennar, akkompagnert av The Daydreamers, vart spelt inn 20. desember 1947, og gjeve ut av Decca Records med B-sida «You Turned the Tables on Me».[10] Den mest kjende innspelinga hennar av «How High the Moon» er på albumet hennar Ella in Berlinfrå 1960, og versjonen hennar vart innlemma i Grammy Hall of Fame i 2002.[11]
Songen har blitt ein signøyarjazzstandard og har blitt spelt inn mange gonger i forskjellige sjangrar.
