Barbara Thompson
Barbara Gracey Thompson, MBE, (27. juli 1944–9. juli 2022) er ein engelsk jazzsaksofonist, fløytist og komponist.

Thompson vart fødd i Oxford. Ho studerte klarinett, fløyte, piano og klassisk komposisjon ved Royal College of Music, men musikken til Duke Ellington og John Coltrane fekk ho til å endre interesse mot jazz og saksofon. Sidan 1967 var ho gift med trommeslagaren Jon Hiseman i musikkgruppa Colosseum.[1]
Kring 1970 var Thompson ein del av Neil Ardley sitt New Jazz Orchestra[2][3] og var med på album av Colosseum.[4] Frå og med 1975 spelte ho i tre band:
- United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, eit «band av bandleiarar» med Wolfgang Dauner (p), Volker Kriegel (g), Albert Mangelsdorff (tb), Eberhard Weber (b), Ian Carr (tp), Charlie Mariano (sax), Ack van Rooyen (tp) og Jon Hiseman (dr).[5][6]
- Barbara Thompson's Jubiaba (9-mann stoart latin/rockeband) inkludert Peter Lemer, Roy Babbington, Henry Lowther, Ian Hamer, Derek Wadsworth, Trevor Tomkins, Bill Le Sage, Glyn Thomas.[1][7]
- Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, i lag med Peter Lemer (p), Billy Thompson (v), Dave Ball (b) og Jon Hiseman på trommer.[5]
Thompson fekk diagnosen Parkinsons sjukdom i 1997 og gav seg som aktiv saksofonist i 2001.[5] Ho arbeidde så ei tid utelukkande som komponist, men kom attende på scenen i 2003[8] for å erstatte ein sjuk Dick Heckstall-Smith under ein Colosseum-turné. I 2005 spelte ho med Paraphernalia på «Never Say Goodbye»-turneen. Sidan 2004 vart ho permanent medlem av Colosseum då ho klarte å halde sjukdommen sin i sjakk. I 2015 gav ho seg i Colosseum for godt.
Thompson har arbeidd tett med Andrew Lloyd Webber på musikalane hans,[5] som Cats og Starlight Express, og på hans Requiem. Ho har komponert fleire klassiske verk, komponert for film og fjernsyn, og skrive eigne musikalar, i tillegg til songar for The United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia og storbandet hennar Moving Parts.
Ho har spelt musikk for TV-serien A Touch of Frost og fløyte på Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds.
