In Search of the Lost Chord er det tredje albumet til The Moody Blues, gjeve ut på Deram Records i juli 1968.

Innhald og stil endre

In Search of the Lost Chord er eit konseptalbum kring eit breitt tema om søken og oppdaging, inkludert oppdagingsreiser på jorda («Dr. Livingstone, I Presume»), musikk og filosofi gjennom tidene («House of Four Doors»), tapt kjærleik («The Actor»), andeleg utvikling («Voices in the Sky»), kunnskap i ei verd i endring («Ride My See-Saw»), høgare medvit («Legend of a Mind»), fantasi («The Best Way to Travel») og romforsking («Departure»). Romutforsking var òg tema på albumet deira frå 1969, To Our Children's Children's Children, inspirert av og tilskriven Apollo 11-ekspedisjonen. Den mystiske «tapte akkorden» frå tittelen viser seg å vere mantraet «Om», den siste strofa i Graeme Edge-diktet «The Word». I følgje klaverspelaren Mike Pinder var tittelen inspirert av ein komisk song av Jimmy Durante, «I'm the Guy that Found the Lost Chord», som i seg sjølv refererer til «The Lost Chord» av Sir Arthur Sullivan.^[5]

Innspeling endre

Innspelinga av albumet kom i gang i januar 1968 med innspelinga av Thomas sin «Legend of a Mind». Tittelen på songen er ikkje med i teksten, som omhandlar LSD-tilhengjaren Timothy Leary. Etter å ha nytta London Festival Orchestra på Days of Future Passed spelte The Moody Blues alle instrumenta sjølv på dette albumet (33 i alt).^[6] Indiske instrument som sitar (spelt av gitaristen Justin Hayward) og tambura (spelt av klaverspelaren Mike Pinder) vart nytta på fleire spor. Andre uvanlege instrument (for Moody Blues) vart òg nytta, som obo (spelt av fløytisten Ray Thomas) og cello (spelt av bassisten John Lodge, som stemde han som ein bassgitar). Mellotronen, spelt av Pinder, skapte lydar av strykarar og blåsarar.

Etter å ha eksperimentert med opplesing i mellomspela på «Morning Glory» og «Late Lament» på Days of Future Passed, prøvde gruppa dette ut igjen på Graeme Edge-songane «Departure» og «The Word». Sistnemnde vart opplesen av Pinder, som òg las dikta til Edge på dette og andre Moody Blues-album. «Departure», som eskalerer frå mumling til hysterisk latter, er eit sjeldan døme på at Edge las sine eigne ord.

In Search of the Lost Chord kom ut 26. juli 1968. Albumet nådde femteplassen i Storbritannia^[7] og 23. plassen på albumlista i USA.^[8] Ingen av dei to singlane frå albumet, «Ride My See-Saw» og «Voices in the Sky», gjekk inn på Topp 40 på Billboard-lista i USA, men sistnemnde nådde 27. plassen på singellista i Storbritannia.

I mars 2006 vart albumet gjeven ut på ny i SACD-format som ei dobbel luksusutgåve. Andre Moody Blues-album som kom ut i luksusformat i 2006 inkluderte dei originale kvadrofoniske (omkoda til 5.1-kringlyd) miksen, men sidan In Search of the Lost Chord aldri kom ut på dette formatet, var ikkje albumet tilgjengeleg i kringlyd før 2018 då ein ny miks vart gjeven ut i høve 50-årsjubileumsutgåva. I 2008 vart albumet igjen gjeven ut på CD, denne gongen på ei plate med ni bonusspor.

Ettermæle endre

I Q og Mojo si spesialutgåve Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, vart albumet plassert på 37. plassen på lista deira over «40 Cosmic Rock Albums».^[9]
