Off the Ground er det niande studioalbumet til Paul McCartney, gjeve ut i 1993. Det var det første studioalbumet hans i 1990-åra og ein oppfølgjar til det kritikarroste Flowers in the Dirt (1989).

Innspeling og struktur endre

Etter å ha planlagd ein verdsturné kalla The New World Tour i 1993 for å marknadsføre albumet, valde McCartney å spele inn Off the Ground med turnébandet sitt. Blair Cunningham kom med på trommer i staden for Chris Whitten, som hadde slutta for å bli med i Dire Straits.

McCartney valde å spele inn albumet «live i studio», som tydde at bandet måtte øve inn kvar song, og så spele dei inn frå A til Å, i staden for å spele inn dei forskjellige instrumental og vokalspora kvar for seg. Dette gav ei ny, fersk og direkte kjensle i musikken, men vart ikkje veldig godt motteke av kritikarane.

Komposisjonane var mindre kompliserte enn på Flowers in the Dirt, og somme av dei hadde vore unytta songar frå tidlegare album. «Mistress and Maid» og «The Lovers That Never Were» vart skriven av McCartney i samarbeid med Elvis Costello på slutten av 80-talet, og fleire av desse songane var blitt nytta på Flowers in the Dirt. Men i motsetnad til dette albumet, spelar ikkje Costello på Off the Ground.

Dei to første songane som vart spelte inn var «Biker Like an Icon» og «Peace in the Neighbourhood», som begge kom frå øvingar i november 1991.[1]

Det aukande samfunnsengasjementet til McCartney kom til syne på dette albumet med antidyreplageri-songen «Looking for Changes» (McCartney og kona Linda hadde begge lenge vore vegetarianarar) eller songar om ei betre verd («Hope of Deliverance» og «C'Mon People»). B-sida «Big Boys Bickering» skjelde ut politikarar der linja «Big boys bickering, fucking it up for everyone» synte ei meir aggressiv side for McCartney.

På CD-utgåva var eit løynd spor, eit kort utdrag av «Cosmically Conscious», som opphavleg vart skriven av McCartney i 1968 då The Beatles drog til India. Heile versjonen vart gjeven ut som B-sida til «Off the Ground» og kom seinare ut på Off the Ground: The Complete Works.

Den første singelen frå albumet, «Hope of Deliverance», kom ut den siste veka i desember 1992 og albumet kom ut 2. februar 1993.[14] Off the Ground var det første Paul McCartney-albumet utan store hittar i Amerika sidan Wings-albumet Wild Life i 1971. Den første singelen nådde 18. plassen i Storbritannia, der «C'Mon People» òg vart ein mindre hit. I USA gjekk tittelsporet på albumet inn på Adult Contemporary-lista på ein 27. plass. Andre stader vart «Hope of Deliverance» ein større suksess. Det vart den første internasjonale hitten til McCartney sidan «Say, Say, Say» med Michael Jackson i 1983, og nådde topp 5 i fleire europeiske land, og selde 250 000 eksemplar berre i Tyskland.

I Storbritannia debuterte albumet på femteplassen, men fall raskt ut av lista. Etter berre seks veker var albumet ute av Topp 100.[15] I USA nådde albumet 17. plassen på Billboard 200 og selde berre 53 000 eksemplar den første veka, men klarte etter kvart å oppnå gullplate-status der.[16] Sjølv om det vart møtt med lunkne kritikarar og nokså dårlege salstal i Storbritannia og Nord-Amerika, gjorde albumet det langt betre i Europa. I somme land, som Frankrike og Japan, selde dette albumet meir enn føregangaren Flowers in the Dirt.[17][18] I Tyskland er Off the Ground det mestseljande albumet til McCartney, og det låg 20 veker på Topp 10 og selde til slutt til platinaplate for over ein halv million selde eksemplar.[19]

Somme veker etter albumet kom ut, drog McCartney i gang The New World Tour, som tok han verda rundt på sommaren. Konsertopptak frå turneen kom ut på konsertalbumet Paul Is Live mot slutten av 1993.

Off the Ground: The Complete Works endre

Off the Ground: The Complete Works er ei dobbelplate som kom ut i Tyskland og Nederland. Den førte plata inneheld det originale albumet, medan den andre plata er ei samling av B-sider og andre songar som ikkje kom på albumet. Det inneheldt òg to songar som ikkje kom ut på MTV Unplugged-konserten hans i 1991, «Things We Said Today» og «Midnight Special».

Trass i tittelen manglar samlinga to B-sider og tre remixar: «Deliverance» og «Deliverance (Dub Mix)».

Off the Ground: The Complete Works er ikkje lenger tilgjengeleg.
