Loving the Alien (1983–1988) er ein plateboks av den engelske musikaren David Bowie, utgjeve 12. oktober 2018.[3][4] Det er ein oppfølgjar til plateboksane Five Years (1969–1973), Who Can I Be Now? (1974–1976) og A New Career in a New Town (1977–1982), og dekkjer perioden av karrieren til Bowie frå 1983 til 1988, den mest kommersielt suksessrike perioden hans. Samlinga består av elleve CD-plater eller 15 LP-plater.

Plateboksen inneheld den eksklusive plata Never Let Me Down 2018, ein ny versjon av albumet frå 1987, og Dance, ein alternativ versjon frå 2018 av ei tidlegare planlagd med skrinlagd samling av 12"-singlar. To plater var opphavleg eksklusive for boksen, men vart sidan gjevne ut som separate plater. Desse var konsertalbuma frå Serious Moonlight- og Glass Spider-turneen frå 1983 og 1987. Serious Moonlight-albumet kom ut for første gongen på lydplate, med den same setlista og lyden som i konsertfilmen Serious Moonlight (utanom at eit konsertopptak av «Modern Love», spelt inn i Montreal vart lagt til). Glass Spider var tidlegare gjeven ut som ein del av DVD-en som kom i 2007 av konsertfilmen Glass Spider.

Samlinga inneheld òg Re:Call 4, ei samling av singlar, singelversjonar og B-sider og filmmusikkutgjevingane Labyrinth, Absolute Beginners og When the Wind Blows, alle frå 1986.

Plateboksen inneheld òg ommastra utgåver av Let's Dance (1983), Tonight (1984) og Never Let Me Down (1987).

Samlinga kom med dei bok med sjeldne og tidlegare ikkje-publiserte fotografi av fotografar som Denis O'Regan, Greg Gorman, Herb Ritts og mange andre, i tillegg til historiske pressemeldingar og tekniske notat om albuma frå produsentane og lydteknikarane Nile Rodgers, Hugh Padgham, Mario McNulty og Justin Shirley-Smith.[5]

Remiks-samlinga Dance var opphavleg planlagt som ei utgjeving av EMI i 1985. Konseptet for albumet var ganske annleis enn versjonen som kom ut i denne plateboksen. Sju spor frå denne tida skulle få ekstra produksjon og skulle miksast av Paul Sabu og Rusty Garner. Denne ideen vart sidan skrinlagt, men plateomslaget var alt laga og somme fysiske eksemplar av omslaget har sidan kome ut, før lageret vart øydelagd. Versjonen av Dance som kom ut i Loving the Alien (1983–1988) er berre ei samling av dei originale 12"-miksane frå perioden, utanom dei fleste dub-miksane. Denne utgåva av Dance nyttar same omslag som var meint for det originale konseptet i 1985.
